Specimens of Time, Albedo

A generative sculpture that utilizes real-time data, optical materials and light to portray the visceral essence of the Coral Barrier Reef.

SPECIMENS OF TIME, ALBEDO

Specimens of Time, Albedo is a dynamic light sculpture comprised of three parts, made to evoke the visceral essence of untouched polar landscapes. It uses optical materials, light, and generative algorithms to capture the light reflection off the ice, which is known as albedo. This visually striking phenomenon also serves as an indicator of climate change. When the albedo is low and ice melts, darker surfaces like water are revealed, which absorb more sunlight and heat, leading to further warming.

The artwork is permanently installed on the National Geographic Resolution ship, traveling from the Arctic to Antarctica. It immerses passengers in a dynamic interplay of light, depth, and color that is both evocative of natural beauty and symbolic of climate change. The artwork aims to raise awareness and inspire action to preserve our planet.

Specimen of Time, Albedo is part of a larger body of work called Specimens of Time. This series showcases generative sculptures that use optical materials, light, and real-time data to immerse viewers in moments of transition and real-time changes in nature's most pristine parts. Each sculpture represents a different aspect of untouched environments, including the rhythmic tides of the Great Barrier Reef, the pure air of the Amazon rainforest, the crystalline waters of New Zealand's Blue Lakes, the vibrant wildflower blooms in Oregon's Columbia River Gorge, and the enchanting dance of the Northern Lights in polar regions like Norway.
